In case you haven’t noticed, it’s back-to-school month! I’m actually kind of in shock at how early some schools start – here in Alabama schools already started this week! We’re about to move back to Utah, where my oldest son is starting kindergarten the last Tuesday of the month. I’m thankful I get to have a little extra time with him before he’ll be gone half the day.
In honor of all the children going back to school, I have created the ultimate list of do-it-yourself pencil pouches. My goal in creating this list was to compile all of the pencil pouches, bags, cases, and other types of bags that could work for pencils into one location, and have it nicely organized, so if you want to create a pencil case you can easily pick a pattern that inspires you and go for it. There are so many tutorials out there, and I am sure I have missed some! If you come across a tutorial for a pencil case (or make one yourself) and would like it featured on this post, please shoot me an email (sunni (at) sewingblue.com) so that I can add it to this list. It is the “ultimate” list after all!

It’s such a simple shape: two rectangle sides with a zipper at the top, lined or not-lined. Yet as you can see below, there are so many varieties of this standard shape! Add some different fabric blocks, a fun print, or even some lace or pom poms if you’re going for girly. So many takes on the same basic pencil case!
If you prefer a different sort of flat case to house your writing utensils, maybe one of these will work for you? All of these are flat but the closure is different than the standard zipper at the top of the case.

These are my personal favorite. The boxed corners on the cases give them a little extra personality. There’s so much variation you can do on these too depending on how much you box the bottom and place the zipper. Love it!
I sold Mary Kay for a few months one summer, and my favorite thing I got out of it was my travel roll-up bag. Rolled-up containers keep things nicely separated for those who need a little more organization.

I love the idea of putting hooks on a pencil bag to be able to store inside of your binder. I mean, if you use your binder, that’s where the writing utensils should be stored anyway, right? Makes sense, and these are some wonderful ways to do it!
